Kulturkataster

The Kulturkataster is here!

The Kulturkataster is now online and publicly accessible! With currently 2,441 locations – ranging from studios and clubs to museums and graffiti spaces – it makes Berlin’s cultural diversity systematically visible for the first time.

Berlin is getting a Kulturkataster

Spaces for art and culture are a scarce resource in Berlin, many of which have been lost over recent decades, with numerous others still at risk at their current locations. A Berlin Kulturkataster aims to help protect these spaces, open up new ones, and strengthen cultural participation. The foundation is a public, comprehensive inventory of cultural spaces and venues in a browser-based map application, which is combined with analytically usable context data to create a unique instrument for culturally-informed urban development.

Das Kulturkataster als partizipativer Prozess

In both its development and its ongoing evolution, we rely on close collaboration with stakeholders from art, culture, and administration in order to understand and articulate their needs. A steering committee advises us on all content-related and editorial matters. At an annual Kataster Conference, we present our results and jointly develop the next steps.

For the technical development of the Kulturkataster, Technologiestiftung Berlin was commissioned by KRB with implementation. Carsten Hein was commissioned for digital project management. Common Studio was commissioned with the development of design guidelines and UI components. Studio für unendliche Möglichkeiten supported the project in developing the concept and the participation formats.
